What goes into the grade

A certificate isn’t compliant just because it exists. Wardly grades against the things that actually protect you on a job:

  • Coverage limits vs. required. Each limit on the certificate—general liability, auto, umbrella, workers’ comp—is compared to the minimum you set. A sub carrying $500K when you require $1M is flagged, not filed.
  • Additional insured status.Wardly checks whether your entity is named as additional insured and whether the endorsement backs it up—not just a checked box on the certificate.
  • Waiver of subrogation. Confirms the waiver is present where your contract requires it.
  • Primary & non-contributory. Verifies the language is in place so your policy isn’t pulled in first.
  • Expiration & effective dates. Confirms coverage is in force for the period that matters—a certificate that expires next week grades differently than one good all year.

Put together, the letter grade is a fast read on how completely a certificate meets yourstandard—and the gap list tells you exactly what to send back for.

By hand vs. with Wardly

Reading certificates by hand

  • Open each PDF and hunt for limits, then compare to a requirements sheet in another tab.
  • Squint at endorsement boxes with no way to confirm the endorsement actually exists.
  • Easy to miss a low limit or a missing waiver when you’re processing dozens of subs.
  • No consistent record of why a certificate was accepted or rejected.

Frequently asked questions

How does Wardly grade a certificate of insurance A–F?

Wardly reads the ACORD 25 automatically and compares what it finds against the requirements you set—coverage limits, additional insured status, waiver of subrogation, primary and non-contributory language, and expiration dates. It then assigns a letter grade that reflects how completely the certificate meets your standard, so an A means it clears every requirement and lower grades flag exactly what’s missing.

Can I set my own COI requirements?

Yes. The grade is measured against your requirements, not a generic template. You define the minimum limits per coverage type and which endorsements you need, and Wardly grades every incoming certificate against that standard. Different jobs can carry different requirements.

Does grading replace reading certificates by hand?

For the routine cross-checking, yes. Wardly does the line-by-line comparison—limits versus required, endorsements present or missing, dates in force—the moment a certificate arrives. You still make the call on edge cases, but you’re reviewing a graded result and a list of gaps instead of squinting at a PDF against a spreadsheet.
